With our degree show nearing (with just 5 Weeks to go), over the last few days I decided it was time to temporarily step away from the 5th floor laser cutters and studio and head over to the Alex building, where our degree show will be held. I did this with three key considerations in mind: space, scale and logistics.
Being in situ allowed me to thoroughly consider the spot to exhibit my work in which I shortly will be required to pitch for. Most importantly this opportunity allowed me to make fundamental decisions on the shapes and dimensions of my panels.
When I arrived in Alex there was a great deal of spaces to consider and many options to contemplate. I originally anticipated that a corner space would be ideal for my work, allowing the audience to feel immersed in a space of over grown metal foliage forms. However, after logically planning the layout of my samples I realised the odd quantity of panels lent themselves better to a flat wall space, as it was difficult to split them evenly around the corner. Once I had decided the corridor was apt for my collection, I went ahead creating a mock-up of my design using laser cut shapes and cut out artwork of the panels. This allowed me to realise the shapes and original composition I planned didn’t have as strong an impact as I would like in life and full scale. Following this realisation, and an evening of researching and further planning, I finalised my design to be one large panel with a series of six smaller panels, three either side. This will allow me to showcase both scale alongside a variety of techniques and materials.
As a maker, logical thinking, maths, planning and project management are an integral aspects of my practice, as well being fundamental skills when working with external companies in the production of my work.
With measurements finalised, files about to be sent for laser cutting in metal, I’m eager to see the results and my final collection in the flesh very soon.
