The race to market was a week-long event, with the purpose of developing a business plan to bring into the marketplace. Throughout the week we had a range of talks and workshops covering a range of topics including, business plans, marketing, self-promotion, copy right and pitching and presentation skills. As the week progressed we begun to package a pitch to present to judges from industry at the end of the week.
At the beginning of the week I developed two business ideas, my first idea was to design and retail a range of laser cut metal panels/ wall art for interiors. My second and more ambitious idea was to offer a bespoke design service for interiors, sight specific wood and exteriors from a range of materials. I chose to focus on my initial idea, which would allow me to consider how I could begin to sell the work I’m already producing as part of my studies. Whilst the workshops covered a range of business and financial topics they were not design specific, my aim is to in the long run achieve my second business idea as well. To achieve this I feel it would be beneficial to experience and learn more about working with clients for sight specific work, these are skills I’m excited to learn as I start my internship with FreshWest next week.
Following a week full of learning, reflection and a lot of preparation the event came to a close seeing me successfully presenting my pitch to a panel of judges from industry. I received positive feedback on both my business ideas and my pitching skills, which gave me insight as to how pitching and presentation is a strength and a highly valuable skill, as well as given me huge amounts of confidence in how my work as a maker and my business knowledge would be viable for self-employment.
