This week with university I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit Collect at the Saatchi Gallery in London. This was the first time I had experienced visiting an international art fair for contemporary objects and craft.
Throughout the gallery’s floors were stands filled with a vast range of highly skilled handmade craft objects and installations. It was lovely to see the true value of craft and how people appreciated each piece exhibited there.
Whilst at Collect I discovered an extraordinary amount of talent and inspiration but I’ve taken the tricky task of narrowing it down to my top 3 inspirations for this blog post:

Vezzini and Chen
Their stand showcased highly skilled crafts in both hand-carved ceramics and blown glass.
I was inspired by how they had made functional pieces, where the work had a purpose beyond aesthetics. I was particularly inspired by their lighting products, as well as their sculptural wall pieces. It was inspirational to see how they have produced work for interiors e.g their lighting as well as installation pieces.
Hart Glass

Laura Hart's display was visually striking; small individual boxes held glass Orchids which formed a series of panels. It was incredible to see all the small details, craft skills and time, that had gone into each piece. In the Eley Kishimoto live project, I created a range of material surfaces displayed as a series of panels. Having the opportunity to see a designer work in a similar way was beneficial for my own practice. Laura's work has given me the realisation of the potential of material surfaces and how they could be translated into pieces of art themselves for a galleries; an application of my work I have previously not explored.
The Cynthia Corbett Gallery

The sculptural designs by Sandra Shashou, working with both panels and a 3d object, were inspirational to see. I became interested in how it was constructed from fragments of china alongside the narrative conveyed through the work.
Her work has also influenced my current project collections where I've become inspired by found broken fragments of china, as well as drawing from china in local museums. I aim to create a constructed outcome for this project, and Sandra's work has been an inspiration as to how commercial a project like this can be.
I learnt a lot from my experience of visiting Collect , realising the potential of how I could target my work with both 2d panels and 3d functional objects as bespoke pieces for galleries as well as interiors. Having this flexibility and transferability allows me to apply my skills and work to different markets, opening up more opportunities for personal enterprise and employment.
